Here are some simple steps that you can take to minimize the strain traveling puts on your body.

  • Plan for your trip in advance.  Make sure the last couple of days prior to leaving are as relaxed as possible, and try to get some extra rest and sleep.  You don’t want to start your journey all stressed out, if possible.  If not, try to relax and stretch out prior to boarding the plane.
  • Ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones are very helpful in decreasing the stress that noisy planes put on the body.
  • For overnight flights, quality eyeshades make it much easier to sleep and will enhance your journey.
  • During the flight, opt for lighter meals and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.  Consume plenty of water or fruit juices instead of caffeine, alcohol and high sugar drinks.
  • When you arrive at your destination, try to stay awake until normal bedtime.  Don’t sleep otherwise you may struggle to sleep at night. If you are totally exhausted then have a short nap as soon as you arrive, however set your alarm or order a wake-up call.
  • Saline Solution is great for keeping your sinuses hydrated and can help prevent the spread of germs to your sinuses.  My Mom told me about this many years ago and it really works! Only water and salt or pure saline solution.
  • Natural light / Sun it very helpful in assisting your body to adjust to a new place.  Make sure to get outside.
  • The best method to stay awake is to stay active. Keep moving!
  • After arriving, try to eat light for the first day with a focus on comfort food that is easy to digest.
  • Regularly stretch and walk around the plane.
  • Go for a walk after dinner.  You may be exhausted, but going to bed on a full stomach can disrupt your sleep.
  • After a long trip and especially before bed, a hot bath or long shower is very helpful to prepare for a restful night.
