Your body’s internal clock is slightly longer than 24 hours, about 24.5 hours per day. When you travel from east to west, your body just extends your day, reacting to receiving light for longer. This allows for more adjustment time for your body, producing a smoother transition into a different time zone. The opposite, traveling east from west, shortens your day, confusing your body immensely. Traveling east will require about a day and a half per time zone crossed to completely reset your circadian rhythm, whereas traveling west only takes less than a day per time zone to catch up. Both result in jet lag which can be extremely disruptive to your trip or your return home.
