Traveling often disrupts your positive daily nutrition habits, especially if you’re trying to maintain healthy meals and workouts. Long transcontinental flights combined with airports that lack healthy food options could cause you to indulge in fast-food meals before take offs. Well those guilty episodes can now be buried in memories where they belong. We’re excited to give you  some tips on ways to improve your eating habits during these trips. By applying these convenient best practices in order to feel home away from home, will add tremendous value to your energy level and overall wellness while traveling.

Get drunk - on water...

First of all, it’s important that you stay hydrated before taking any flights. Always have one or two water bottles before taking off.  This will not only help you feel full but also help you stay hydrated during the flight which will make your immune system stronger. You’ll now be able to combat all those germs you encounter waiting in lines, using payment and check-in machines, and being in close proximity to other passengers.

Pack snacks beforehand...

Second, it’s important to plan accordingly. Pack certain snacks and plan on when to eat them depending on your flight time, stops, or layovers at any other airports. Not every airport has healthy food options, therefore check beforehand on the airport’s website to view all the vendors/restaurant options they have before arriving. If you would like to avoid high costs when buying your flight snacks at the airport, you can always bring them from home. Fruits, nuts, protein bars, granola bars, veggie chips, and homemade popcorn are among the recommendations for healthy energy filled snacks for your flight. Never starve yourself before a long flight, so before leaving for the airport, have a big meal at home that will keep you full for most of the flight to eliminate those unhealthy cravings.

Eat lean...

Try eating lean protein before the flight and of course a lot of vegetables full of nutrients and fiber to keep your digestive system working. However, avoid all “gassy” foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, sodas, etc. Also, avoid any alcoholic beverages during the flight which can increase dehydration. Fruits are full of water content so they will keep you hydrated as well.

Still, every airport provides you with small stores where you can find any of these snacks, it’s just a matter of planning and being organized when you fly. Remember, it usually takes a small amount of planning but is starts with just making a decision to follow through with it even when there are 10 other things on your to do list to accomplish before the trip. In a nutshell (pun intended) there is always a way to enhance your diet even during your busy travels. Your overall wellness and energy levels can drastically affect the quality of your trip. So even during those brief or long excursions as a global citizen, you can still honestly feel home away from home!
