Taking some of the simple and perhaps obvious traditional steps to ease being completely exhausted after your long flight might also be worth considering.

  • Plan for your trip in advance, making sure the last couple of days prior to leaving you are as relaxed as possible, and try to get some extra rest and sleep.  You don’t want to start your journey all stressed out if at all possible.  If not try to relax and stretch out prior to boarding the plane.

  • Opt for lighter meal options and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Consume plenty of water or fruit juices in preference to caffeine, alcohol and high sugar drinks.

  • While those in-flight movies are tempting, opt for sleep instead according to your adjusted watch time

  • Ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones are very helpful, planes are very noisy.

  • Quality eyeshades make it much easier to sleep, and people don’t bother you.

  • An inflatable travel pillow for extra comfort may make it easier to catch some sleep.

  • Regularly stretch and walk around the plane.

  • Drink as much water as you can.

  • Saline Solution is great for keeping your sinuses hydrated and can help prevent the spread of germs to your sinuses.  My Mom told me about this many years ago and it really works.  Only water and salt or pure saline solution.

  • When you arrive at your destination, try to stay awake until early evening. Don’t sleep otherwise you may struggle to sleep at night. If you are totally exhausted then have a short nap as soon as you arrive however set your alarm or order a wake-up call.

  • The best method to stay awake is to stay active. The adrenalin of being on an exciting holiday should keep you awake.

  • Natural light / Sun is very helpful in assisting your body to adjust to a new place.  Make sure to get outside.

  • After a long trip and before bed a hot bath or long shower is very help to to help prepare for a restful night.

  • Try to eat light the first day you arrive, comfort food that is easy to digest is best.

  • Try to go for a walk after dinner, you may be exhausted but going to bed on a full stomach will not make a great night’s sleep.
